Bergen County Chiropractor, Dr Peter Ferraro of Ferraro Spine and Rehabilitation, explains how chiropractic care can be a helpful treatment for those suffering from whiplash.
“Whiplash” is defined as a sudden hyperextension followed by an immediate hyperflexion of the neck that results in damage to the muscles, ligaments and tendons, especially those that support the head. A complicated and sometimes controversial injury, whiplash cannot always be detected by an x-ray as it involves an unpredictable combination of damage to the nervous system, and is not simple to diagnose.
NJ chiropractor, Dr. Peter Ferraro, explains that there are four phases of a whiplash injury, which is described in the form of a car accident.
Phase one involves the compression of discs and joints as your car is essentially pushed out from under you when someone rear-ends you, as well as the seat accelerating you forward.
During phase two, your torso reaches peak acceleration while your head has not yet begun to accelerate forward. This causes an abnormal S-curve, and this phase causes the most bone, joint and nerve damage.
Phase three involves your torso descending back and your head and neck at their peak forward acceleration while your car is slowing down. This increases the severity of the flexion injury your neck is already sustaining.
The final and most damaging phase, phase four, is when your neck moves forward completely while your torso is stopped by your seat belt shoulder restraint. This violent movement tears fibers in the spinal discs and forces vertebrae out of their normal position. You may even encounter a concussion.
