Bergen County Chiropractor, Dr. Peter Ferraro, recommends light strengthening and stretching exercises to help relieve lower back pain. According to Dr. Ferraro, muscles that are exercised often can utilize oxygen more efficiently, which helps them become stronger and healthier overtime.

With specific focus on the back, strengthening the muscles that support the spine, the stomach, back and leg muscles, can reduce pressure on spinal discs and prevent disc injury. In addition to strengthening exercises, those with lower back pain can also benefit from aerobic exercises such as walking or swimming. Aerobic exercise helps muscles use oxygen more efficiently. Muscles that frequently receive oxygen-rich blood stay healthier.

Dr. Ferraro is quoted, “Most low back pain can get better if patients stay active. Patients whose low back pain prevents them from being active need to seek professional treatment.”

Dr Ferraro’s Bergen County Chiropractic office offers a variety of treatment programs which can combine chiropractic care and physical therapy to help strengthen and alleviate low back pain so that patients can resume most normal activities. Patients that avoid treatment or activity because of pain can be causing much more serious harm to their back. Too little activity can lead to loss of flexibility, strength, and endurance, and then eventually to more pain.

Non surgical relief of herniated or ‘slipped disc’ injuries are available at the office of Bergen County chiropractor, Dr Peter Ferraro.  The Saddle Brook, NJ office offers non-invasive and non-surgical treatment options to treat pain associated with herniated discs.

A disc herniation is a displaced portion of the center part or nucleus of the disc that is pushed through a tear in the outer layer or annulus of the disc.  Pain results when irritating substances are released from this tear and also if the fragment touches or compresses a nearby nerve.  Disc herniation has some similarities to degenerative disc disease and discs that herniate are often in an early stage of degeneration.  Herniated discs are common in the low back or lumbar spine.

Two non-surgical treatment options available for NJ patients include spinal decompression therapy and PRP injections.

Spinal Decompression Therapy

With a very high success rate, Spinal Decompression Therapy helps keep patients out of the operating room and back on their feet without weeks of downtime. Published literature has shown a 92% success rate in treating disc injuries with decompression therapies, and Dr. Ferraro says that the vast majority of his patients have made a full recovery after decompression therapy.

During Spinal Decompression Therapy, patients are placed in a harness that keeps them in a stable position while a computer-controlled series of stretches targets specific areas of the spine.  The duration of the therapy session is approximately 25 minutes, with patients receiving a series of 20-25 sessions over a period of 7-8 weeks.  Dr. Ferraro offers decompression therapy in conjunction with manual treatments and physical therapy for maximum effectiveness.

Platelet Rich Protein (PRP) Injections

Platelet Rich Protein (PRP) injections is a cutting-edge medical technique that uses the patient’s own blood to help them heal. Since the solution being injected into the patient comes from his or her own body, there is very low risk for transmissible infection or allergic reaction. Additionally, early research has shown such positive results that it may be a way to avoid surgery and a lengthy recovery. Affiliated medical doctors at Dr Ferraro’s office perform the treatment.

Platelet Rich Protein injections have shown success in treating a variety of ailments including chronic back pain, degenerative disc disease, nerve inflammation, bursitis, joint pain and more.

Dr Ferraro and the superb clinical staff of physical therapists and medical doctors can help treat mild to severe disc herniations where surgery is either not recommended or unwanted by the patient. These types of cases often require some form of non surgical therapy in conjunction with Chiropractic care, hands on physical therapy, and pain management as needed.

Bergen County spinal disc doctor, Dr. Peter Ferraro, explains the term “slipped disc”, as well as how to detect and treat this condition also known as herniated disc. NJ patients with spinal disc injuries should know that discs don’t, in fact, actually “slip.” They either become herniated or bulge out between the vertebrae. A herniation is actually displaced gelatinous fluid that migrates from the center part of the disc through a tear in the outer layers of the disc.

spinal disc doctor njPain is caused from irritating chemical substances being released from the tear in the outer layer of the disc as well as mechanical compression of  a nearby nerve root. Herniated discs are very common in the low back and neck or lumbar and cervical spine. Degenerative disc disease can also cause many of the same symptoms.

Dr. Peter Ferraro, known for treating spinal disc injuries in NJ, explains that there are many factors that cause discs to herniate. Lifestyle choices are a very common factor; smoking, lack of regular exercise and inadequate nutrition/hydration can all contribute to poor disc health. Poor posture, daily wear and tear, injury or trauma, and incorrect lifting or twisting can also contribute to spinal disc injuries. If the disc is already weak, a simple strain such as coughing or bending can cause it to herniate.

Do You Have A Herniated Disc Injury?

Detecting a herniated disc needs a well trained Physician who performs Orthopedic and Neurological testing as well as an MRI for true confirmation. Herniated discs are more commonly found to affect people between the ages of 30 and 40 but can truly affect anyone from the teen athlete to the Geriatric patient. A telltale symptom is pain in the area of the herniation that may radiate across the hips or into the buttocks as well as possibly into the arms and hands. Numbness or radiating pain to the upper or lower extremities can also be common symptoms.

The NJ spinal disc doctors at Ferraro Spine & Rehabilitation as well as the superb clinical staff of Physical Therapists and Acupuncturists can help treat mild to severe disc herniations where surgery is either not recommended or unwanted by the patient. These type of cases often require some form of spinal decompression therapy (offered by Dr. Ferraro, ) in conjunction with Chiropractic care, hands on Physical Therapy, Acupuncture and Pain Management as needed.

Saddle Brook NJ Chiropractor, Dr. Peter Ferraro of Ferraro Spine and Rehabilitation, explains how sciatica is caused, and offers methods to treat the pain.

Sciatica is a term that refers to pain in the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in your body. The sciatic nerve runs from your pelvis through your hip area and buttocks and down each leg. Saddle Brook chiropractor, Dr. Peter Ferraro, explains that this nerve is responsible for controlling many of the muscles in your lower legs, as well as providing feeling in your thighs, legs and feet.

Many Saddle Brook chiropractic patients experience sciatica as a sign that there is an underlying problem putting pressure on a nerve in the lower back. Most commonly, the cause of this is a bulging or herniated lumbar disc. Piriformis syndrome is another common cause, the piriformis being the muscle that lies directly over the sciatic nerve. If this muscle is tight or has a spasm, it can cause sciatic pain. Very commonly, sitting on a wallet in the back pocket can cause this type of sciatic pain.

A tell-tale sign of sciatica is a radiating pain from the lower (lumbar) spine down the buttock to the back of the legs. Other symptoms are numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in the affected leg. Saddle Brook chiropractic patients should be aware that this pain can come in a wide variety of feelings such as a sharp, burning sensation or a long, excruciating discomfort. It is also a pain that often starts gradually and increases with time.

Saddle Brook chiropractor Dr. Peter Ferraro can help with sciatic pain in a number of ways. It can be relieved through a combination of stretches, a deep tissue massage of the piriformis muscle and regular chiropractic care. If it is from chronic lower back pain, a trigger point injection can be beneficial as well. This is when a medical professional injects a small amount of anesthetic into the affected muscle to break the spasm cycle.

Dr. Ferraro can help effectively treat sciatic pain. With two convenient locations in both Bergen and Monmouth Counties, Dr. Ferraro is also very accessible. You can find out more information about treating sciatica by calling Dr. Ferraro’s office at 973-478-2212 or by visiting http://stopbackandneckpain.com .

Saddle Brook Chiropractor, Dr Peter Ferraro of Ferraro Spine and Rehabilitation, explains how upper back and neck pain is caused, and how chiropractic care can effectively treat these conditions.

saddle brook chiropractorThe neck is very susceptible to injury, given that it has to support a 14-16 pound head on a daily basis. It does not take much force to disrupt the delicate balance that the muscles, stabilizers and tendons have in relation to how they carry this weight. Any factors, such as an accident, poor posture, or stress can severely affect this area and cause upper back and neck pain.

Saddle Brook Chiropractor Helps Treat Whiplash

Saddle Brook chiropractic patients should know that the most common injury to the neck and upper back is whiplash. Whiplash is caused by a sudden movement of the head and results in the damage of soft tissue and supporting muscles in the neck and upper back. It can happen during a car accident, sports injury, and are not always detectible right away as sometimes it takes weeks to develop. Chiropractic care is a great way to alleviate symptoms and help heal damage caused by whiplash.

Poor posture is a very common, every-day factor in upper back and neck pain. A simple movement such as reading in bed with your neck resting the wrong way can lead to pain, headaches, and even more extreme, serious problems in the long run.

A constant forward-head placement is common for upper back and neck pain found in Saddle Brook chiropractic patients, especially those who sit at a computer for a good part of the day. Dr. Peter Ferraro suggests keeping your head in a neutral position with your back supported, keep your knees slightly lower than your hips, and keeping your arms supported if possible.

Stress is yet another factor that can seriously affect upper back and neck muscles. ‘Muscle guarding’ is something that happens when a human is in defense mode, and since we are not exposed to such danger, stress causes the same effect. An increase in activity level and deep breathing exercises are things that your chiropractor can coach you on.
