Otitis media usually spurs from a lack of drainage of the lymph system in the neck, which causes the buildup of fluid behind the ear drum. It can also emerge when the muscle that is supposed to keep bacteria or viruses from entering the eustacean tubes (tubes located in the back of the throat that lead to the inner ear) doesn’t work correctly. The reason why this is more common in children is because the shape and length of the eustacean tubes in children are not quite as long or as developed yet, making it more difficult for them to drain and increasing the risk of infection.   Another reason is because the first vertebra, known as the atlas, has a tendency to shift in children which also closes off the eustacian tube. A gentle adjustment of the first vertebrae, if performed early on in the infection process, has shown excellent results in the complete resolution of symptoms.

This being said, the root of otitis media can be mostly blamed on a mechanical problem. Rather than treating with many doses of antibiotics (which can become dangerous in itself, making your child’s future illnesses resistant to them), chiropractic care is a great option for preventing chronic ear infections. Restoring normal drainage in the ears and neck lymphatics is ideal for this condition.
