Bergen County Chiropractor, Dr Peter Ferraro, treats women experiencing pregnancy related discomfort in their lower back. Many women complain of low-back pain while they’re pregnant and may experience other aches and pains as well due to the shift in gravity in their body. When a woman is pregnant, her center of gravity shifts to her pelvis, causing stress on the joints of the pelvis and also on the lower back.
While the baby grows inside of her and the woman’s lower back begins to curve to compensate for the added weight, there is extra stress placed on the fragile facet joins in her spine. According to Dr Ferraro, this can lead to every day pain, especially later in the pregnancy when the woman is carrying the most weight.
Chiropractic care can be a great relief to a pregnant woman in a number of ways, and can also lead to a safer, easier delivery. It is an effective way to help the woman’s spine adjust to her constantly changing belly while her baby grows, while helping women avoid taking pain medications during the course of their pregnancy. Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments can also lead to less time in labor.
It is important for a woman’s balance, comfort, and overall physical stress while pregnant to get regular chiropractic adjustments. It aids in maintaining a solid skeletal structure while also helping nervous system function to ensure a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.
Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy
Some other tips to follow for a healthy pregnancy have a lot to do with diet and light exercise. Some great, low-impact exercises to keep up with are swimming, walking, or stationary cycling. However, it is important to be sure that you refrain from any jerking motions, and if you feel sick or dizzy to immediately cease exercising.
While lifting anything, be sure to bend from the knees, as your back is already carrying more weight than usual and is therefore more prone to injury. Another way to keep pressure off of your lower back is to lay on your side with a pillow between your knees and under the top arm to reduce the twisting that may occur when sleeping on your side. In fact, they actually make “pregnancy wedges” that stay in place better. Flat shoes are also essential to keep pressure off of your lower back. Preferably, find a shoe with an arch support.
Nutrition wise, it is important to eat several small meals a day or have a few snacks in between meals. This keeps nausea at bay, keeps your blood sugar level normal, and allows your body to gain the maximum amount of nutrients from the foods you are eating to nourish your body, as well as your growing child’s.
One last tip is to take a prenatal vitamin every day that has at least 400 micrograms of folic acid. Folic acid has been shown to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Always consult with your doctor first to be sure the vitamins you are taking are healthy for both you and your baby.

Bergen County Chiropractor, Dr Peter Ferraro of Ferraro Spine & Rehabilitation, treats children with chronic ear infections with chiropractic care. One of the most common conditions a child can get is an ear infection.
Many children experience chronic ear infections, which can be detrimental to their hearing, and can even be related to speech and developmental problems. Most infections are treated with common medicine; an antibiotic, ear drops, or something of the like. One treatment that many parents do not know about that can be even more effective is chiropractic care.
A middle ear infection, also known as otitis media, is one of the most common ear infections found in children. Otitis media is caused by a buildup of fluid behind the ear drum, causing the inside of the ear to become inflamed. It is caused by either a bacterial or viral infection and is usually the result of another illness like a common cold. Dr Ferraro says he sees many children with this type of ear infection at his Bergen County Chiropractic office.

Otitis media usually spurs from a lack of drainage of the lymph system in the neck, which causes the buildup of fluid behind the ear drum. It can also emerge when the muscle that is supposed to keep bacteria or viruses from entering the eustacean tubes (tubes located in the back of the throat that lead to the inner ear) doesn’t work correctly. The reason why this is more common in children is because the shape and length of the eustacean tubes in children are not quite as long or as developed yet, making it more difficult for them to drain and increasing the risk of infection. Another reason is because the first vertebra, known as the atlas, has a tendency to shift in children which also closes off the eustacian tube. A gentle adjustment of the first vertebrae, if performed early on in the infection process, has shown excellent results in the complete resolution of symptoms.

This being said, the root of otitis media can be mostly blamed on a mechanical problem. Rather than treating with many doses of antibiotics (which can become dangerous in itself, making your child’s future illnesses resistant to them), chiropractic care is a great option for preventing chronic ear infections. Restoring normal drainage in the ears and neck lymphatics is ideal for this condition.
According to Dr. Ferraro, chiropractors are able to offer a gentler type of treatment as opposed to heavy doses of antibiotics or even surgical procedures. Doctors of chiropractic are licensed and trained to diagnose and treat patients of all ages, and are able to restore normal function of the tissues of the neck. With chiropractic procedures designed specifically for your child’s condition, recurring cases of otitis media can be significantly reduced and in many cases completely eliminated.
